Kiama: Daytripping

I profess. I was in dire need of a holiday. You came just in the nick of time.

Day tripping. Dreams are a wasting. Kiama, here we come.

Kiama is approximately 120km South of Sydney, meaning a little over a 2 hour drive from the city. Permit a little more time should you be taking the coastal drive (highly recommended!) as there are all these little quaint towns along the way to pullover for a coffee break.

So if you are thinking of taking a day trip outside of Sydney and am bombarded by the choices. You might want to consider Kiama. Simply because of the chastity of the destination. A lighthouse and a blowhole. When you're in the midst of such tranquil beauty, life comes to a standstill. Don't expect much, Kiama is pretty much a short row of shops and businesses and that's it. Still, it is a gem that is worth exploring with a loved one.

And food wise, don't worry child; I was fortunate enough to stumble on some treasured food haunts while stationed there that I would love to share with you guys!

A sound place for breakfast would be the Stonewall Cafe. Grab your usuals at this quaint little cafe cornered by a lovely courtyard right after a chilly early sunrise. My Breakfast croissant with tomatoes, avocado, bacon and cheese looked like a humble feast yet worked miracles for the listless appetite. Crisp flaky pastry, no soggy innards intact with a generous serving of well seasoned smashed avocado; the amalgamation of differential temperatures on the palate makes for quite a treat. Coffee here is decent too and I must admit the pancake special looked pretty damm good from across the shop. *jealous glance* It's funny how I always suffer from a case of food envy. Girl.. be satisfied already...

Trying to tame those afternoon munchies? Look no further than Saltwater Cafe along the main stretch for that perfect plate of Fish & Chips; the quintessential part of any seaside road trip.

Choose from a mean selection of fish (blue grenadier, barramundi, flat head, john dory) and then bang your head deciding the choice of cooking ( beer battered, tempura battered, crumbed or grilled). We decided on the Beer battered John Dory ($15.90) and the 1/2 Sea chest with tempura battered blue grenadier ($26) to share. The latter comprises an intimidating pile of seafood cooked to order, fish, calamari, battered scallops, tempura prawns and fresh prawns. Sitting on a fluffy bed of salad, this was perfect to wash away the guilt of all that fried foods, in which case was all wonderfully executed. Did I mention that the homemade tartar sauce was the bomb? Up till I bit on a bit chunk of gherkin. I have my issues with them. All in all, a delicious treat for two hungry scavengers and the perfect way to round up the coastal road trip. Do drop by if you're in desperate need of satisfying those F&C cravings.
